Born and raised at the Jersey shore, Chef Mauro began his love affair with food at a very young age—constantly helping out his mother and grandmother in the kitchen. His love of everything culinary eventually took him on a whirlwind tour of numerous restaurants in Ocean County, New Jersey, where Mauro was able to learn all aspects of the restaurant business.
Eventually Mauro wound up as the Executive Chef at the Stonehouse Inn in Orangeburg, NY. Rated three stars by the New York Times, the Stonehouse Inn won numerous awards for the up-and-coming, young chef.
However, all good things come to an end, and Mauro found himself back in the New Jersey/Philadelphia area where he spent the next 10 years working as a Sous Chef or Executive Chef at some of the finest eateries in the area. Notable restaurants include Food for Thought, Word of Mouth, Andreotti’s Viennese Café, Olive Restaurant and Bar, and Rock Lobster.
Until recently, Mauro presided over the kitchen at The Standard Restaurant and Lounge which opened in Crossgates Mall in 2008. Known for its great food and its eclectic décor, The Standard has quickly made a name for itself, and its talented chef, on the Albany restaurant scene. Some of his notable honors while being the Executive Chef at The Standard include:
- 2011 Mac-N-Cheese Bowl—2nd Place
- 2011 Ginsberg Challenge—Silver Medal (Buffalo Chicken Egg Roll)
- 2011 Guilderland Souped Up—1st Place (Best Chili)
- 2010 Ginsberg Challenge—Bronze Medal (Tuna Nachos)
- 2012 Capital Region Living Awards
- Best Appetizer—2nd Place
- Best Mac-n-Cheese—2nd Place
- Best American Restaurant—3rd Place
On a personal note, Mauro lives in Loudonville with his wife Linda, daughter Gianna, and son Michael. When he isn’t at the restaurant, he loves to spend time with his family and playing bocce and darts at the West Albany Italian Benevolent Society.
